A Broken Computer For Every Light On Broadway
WERECYCLE! PARTNERS WITH BROADWAY GREEN ALLIANCE AT TIMES SQUARE E-WASTE COLLECTION EVENT
WeRecycle! LLC collects used electronic equipment for responsible recycling at the "crossroads of the world"
Mount Vernon, NY (December 21, 2009) - On December 16th, WeRecycle! LLC partnered with the Broadway Green Alliance to collect and recycle electronic waste (e-waste) from cast members of Broadway shows, in an effort to help promote awareness about the importance of responsibly managing end of life electronics. All collected items were packaged for transport and responsibly recycled at WeRecycle! facilities.
As visitors came to drop off their old electronics around New York City's famed Times Square, they were treated to performances of hit songs by the casts of Finian's Rainbow, Guys and Dolls, Mamma Mia!, 9 to 5, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime, South Pacific, The Little Mermaid and Wicked. An original song by composer John Mercurio was created specially for the event, and Broadway performers adlibbed songs about the hazards of electronics waste (e-waste) mismanagement.
Along with the hundreds of attendees, participants, and volunteers, thousands more looked on, getting a clear view of what responsible, domestic recycling looks like.
Gina Chiarella, Executive Vice President of WeRecycle!, said: "This was a remarkable event that brought e-waste recycling to the Crossroad of the World. The event highlighted the importance of recycling electronics domestically, which creates jobs and helps ensure e-waste is not exported overseas."
Allen Hershkowitz, senior scientist at the NRDC, spoke to the crowd about the dangers of e-waste. "Electronic waste is the fastest growing component of our waste stream worldwide, and among the most dangerous," Mr. Hershkowitz said. "When highly visible and culturally influential organizations like Broadway theaters help motivate people to manage their e-waste responsibly, they do a great public service."
The items collected today contain toxins such as lead and mercury. By diverting the e-waste from entering our waste stream, event participants kept the potentially toxic components found in used electronics from leeching into waterways and polluting the environment.
The Broadway Green Alliance was created in 2008 as an Ad Hoc Committee of the Broadway League, and is an industry-wide initiative that seeks to educate, motivate, and inspire the theatre community and its patrons to adopt environmentally friendlier practices in theatrical production and everyday life.
